Let members change their membership

Members upgrade straight away or move to a lower plan at renewal from their account. Owners and admins can email a link to start the change.

Quick answer

Members who pay online can move to another membership from their account. A move to a higher price starts straight away and charges the difference for the rest of the period. A move to a lower or equal price starts at the next renewal with nothing charged today. Owners and admins can email a member a link to start the change.

Before you begin

  • A paid Junocal plan with Stripe connected, and a membership the member pays online.

  • At least two active, public, recurring paid memberships on the same billing cycle and currency.

  • Owner or admin access to email a change link from the client's profile.

You'll know it worked when

  • The member's account shows Change membership on their online-paid membership.

  • An upgrade shows the new plan on the client's profile and a Membership changed sale with today's charge.

  • A downgrade shows the scheduled plan and date on the member's card and the client's profile.

Which memberships can change

  • The member pays for the membership online through Stripe. Desk sales, complimentary and imported memberships are changed by the studio instead.

  • The plans offered are active, public and recurring, with a price above zero, in the same currency and on the same billing cycle, such as one monthly plan to another.

  • Introductory offers, one-time passes and plans with a membership agreement are not offered.

  • The membership is active and not paused, past due, disputed, set to end or still in a free period. The page tells the member which of these applies.

What the member does

  1. 1

In their account, the member chooses Change membership on the membership.

  2. 2

They pick a plan and see the amount due today and the new regular price before anything changes.

  3. 3

They choose Confirm change. An upgrade switches the plan at once. A downgrade is scheduled for the next renewal and shows on the membership card, with an option to keep the current plan.

  4. 4

The member gets an email. Owners and admins get a notification, and Sales shows Membership changed with both plan names and any charge today.

How upgrades and downgrades are billed

An upgrade charges the prorated difference for the rest of the current period, using Stripe's own calculation. Visits already used this period count toward the new plan's allowance, and classes already booked stay booked.

If the card is declined or the bank asks for confirmation, the plan stays as it is. The member can pay on Stripe's secure page to finish, or keep their current plan. An unpaid upgrade lapses after about a day.

Members who pay by bank debit get their upgrade from the next renewal, with nothing charged today.

A downgrade or a move to a plan with the same price takes effect at the next renewal. Nothing is charged today, and the member keeps their current plan until then.

Start a change for a member

  1. 1

As an owner or admin, open the client and expand Manage membership on their membership.

  2. 2

Choose Change membership. Pick a plan under Suggest a membership, or leave Let them choose.

  3. 3

Choose Email the link. The member gets a link that lasts 7 days and confirms the price on their own device.

  4. 4

To stop a scheduled downgrade, choose Cancel scheduled change on the same membership.

Troubleshooting

Start with the symptom that matches what you can see. Check the existing record before repeating a booking, payment or import.

Change membership is missing for a member

Check these first

  • Check whether the membership was sold at the desk, given as complimentary, imported or has an agreement.

  • Check whether it is paused, past due, disputed or set to end.

Next step: The client's profile explains the reason. Resume or settle the membership first, or keep it if it is set to end. For desk-sold or complimentary memberships, record the new membership from the client's profile when the current period ends.

The plan a member wants is not offered

Check these first

  • Check the target plan is active, public, recurring and priced above zero.

  • Compare its billing cycle and currency with the member's current plan.

Next step: Publish the plan with Public listing visibility and a matching billing cycle and currency. Introductory offers, one-time passes and plans with an agreement are never offered.

An upgrade did not go through

Check these first

  • Check whether the card was declined or the bank asked for confirmation.

  • Check the membership card for a move waiting for payment.

Next step: The plan stays as it was until payment succeeds. Ask the member to open the change again and pay on Stripe's page, or keep the current plan. Do not record a second charge.

Answers before you get stuck

Does the member pay twice for the overlap?

No. An upgrade charges only the prorated difference for the rest of the current period. A downgrade charges nothing until the next renewal at the new price.

Do booked classes stay booked after a change?

Yes. Classes already booked stay booked, and visits used this period count toward the new plan's allowance.

Can a member switch between monthly and yearly plans?

Members can switch between plans on the same billing cycle and in the same currency, such as one monthly plan to another monthly plan.
