Collect VAT, GST or sales tax

Turn on Stripe Tax so GST, VAT or sales tax is added at checkout, and see how tax changes a price before you switch it on.

8 min readLast reviewed

Quick answer

Junocal can ask Stripe Tax to add GST, VAT or sales tax to new checkouts. Stripe works out the tax from the registrations in your connected Stripe account, so there is no rate to enter in Junocal. Only the studio owner can turn it on.

Before you begin

  • Connect Stripe and finish its checks so online payments show as Connected.

  • Add your tax registrations, business address and product tax settings in your connected Stripe account.

  • Use the studio owner's account to turn the setting on or off.

You'll know it worked when

  • The Taxes page shows Automatic tax at checkout as On.

  • A test checkout shows a tax line calculated by Stripe.

  • Prices show tax added or included the way you set it up in Stripe.

See how tax changes a price

The Taxes page has a price example. Enter a price and a rate, then compare Add tax to the price with Include tax in the price. It is an illustration only and does not change what clients pay.

Troubleshooting

Start with the symptom that matches what you can see. Check the existing record before repeating a booking, payment or import.

The Turn on Stripe Tax button is missing

Check these first

  • Check that you are signed in as the studio owner.

  • Check that Stripe is connected and can take payments.

Next step: Ask the owner to turn it on from Payments after Stripe setup is complete. Admins can view the Taxes page but cannot change this setting.

Checkout fails after turning on Stripe Tax

Check these first

  • Check your tax registrations and business address in Stripe.

  • Check the product tax settings in your connected Stripe account.

Next step: Finish the tax setup in Stripe, then test a checkout again. Turn Stripe Tax off in Payments until the setup is complete so clients can still pay.

Tax is not being added at checkout

Check these first

  • Check that Automatic tax at checkout shows On in Taxes.

  • Check that you have a Stripe registration for the client's location.

Next step: Turn on Stripe Tax as the owner, or add the missing registration in Stripe. Registering in Stripe alone does not turn tax on in Junocal.

Answers before you get stuck

Can I type in my own VAT or GST rate?

No. Stripe works out the tax at checkout from your registrations and each transaction, so there is no rate to enter in Junocal.

Who can turn Stripe Tax on or off?

Only the studio owner. Admins can open the Taxes page to check the current setup and use the price example.
